NEW YORK – On September 19, 2023, during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, representatives from Argentina and Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) convened to discuss the burgeoning relationship between the two nations. Santiago Cafiero, Argentina’s head of diplomacy, and Elmedin Konaković, BiH’s Foreign Affairs Minister, met on the sidelines of the assembly to deliberate on their countries’ ties.

Argentina’s head of diplomacy, Santiago Cafiero, announced on September 5, 2023, that citizens of BiH will no longer require visas to enter Argentina. The announcement came during a meeting with BiH’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Elmedin Konaković, on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.

According to multiple media outlets, the two diplomats discussed the positive state of political relations between their nations, emphasizing a deep-rooted friendship that transcends geographical distance. Despite the warm political ties, both parties acknowledged the need to bolster economic cooperation, as trade between the two countries has historically been minimal.

The dialogue also touched upon the significance of mutual visits to enhance bilateral relations and the collaboration between BiH and Argentina in international organizations, particularly within the United Nations framework. BiH’s bid for membership in the Economic and Social Council for 2025-2027 was also discussed.

The visa exemption is a notable development for BiH citizens, who, as of September 5, 2023, can access 120 countries and territories either visa-free or with a visa on arrival. This places the BiH passport 51st on the Henley Passport Index, a global ranking of countries based on the travel freedom their citizens enjoy.

This decision by Argentina not only simplifies travel for BiH citizens but also symbolizes the growing international recognition and cooperation that Bosnia and Herzegovina is experiencing in the global arena.
