Famed Serbian film director and musician has all but given up filmmaking and has spent the summer touring Europe with his No Smoking Orchestra.
In November, the two time Palme d’Or-winning director will be performing in Brazil for the first time, at the very eclectic and culturally diverse MIMO Festival, which hosts various musicians and artists from around the world in several Brazilian cities every year.
Emir Kusturica & the No Smoking Orchestra are scheduled to appear in Olinda, near the city of Recife, on November 18, but their tour schedule [en] also mentions an earlier gig in Rio de Janeiro, scheduled for November 11. After Brazil the band is set to return and continue touring Europe.
In late July of this year, Kusturica and his band played a controversial concert in Crimea [en], prior to which he made public statements saying that the “unification” of Crimea and Russia was a “natural, organic process.” The Ukrainian Embassy in Serbia issued a warning at the time, informing the director of the country’s Law on Temporarily Occupied Territories and warning that those visiting Russian-annexed Crimea would be breaching that law and will be prosecuted.
